Hampton Roads Bible Institute
Director, Ben Caprio

It is my great joy each week to spend large portions of time in the text of Scripture for my own study as well as for the purpose of feeding the flock here at Colonial Baptist Church. With every turn of the pages I find a living Lord revealing Himself in His living Word. Even more, I constantly marvel and rejoice as I watch God's Word transform lives, win the lost, save marriages and families, and exalt Jesus Christ.

It is from this footing that I rejoice in the ministry of Hampton Roads Bible Institute. I invite you to become a regular part of this fellowship of learning which will equip you and refresh you in your personal study as well as further equip you for ministry opportunities. Furthermore, we view HRBI as a love gift to our region's Christian school teachers in providing them with vibrant, convenient and economical opportunities to stay current with CEU credits.

Your servant in grace,
Dr. Daniel K. Davey
CBC Pastor

About Hampton Roads Bible Institute

What is the purpose of Hampton Roads Bible Institute?
HRBI is a ministry that offers Scripture-based, Christ-centered, discipleship-oriented Bible and education classes.

Ephesians 4:11-12
"And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ."

Who may take classes at the Institute?
  • Any adult (16 years and over) who desires Bible education
  • Local church lay leadership
  • Vocational Christian leaders and workers
  • Christian school teachers
How is HRBI different from Sunday School?
Each instructor will give reading, quizzes, tests or other graded materials and assign a grade based on the student’s completion.  Regular attendance is expected for successful completion of the course.  Generally speaking, HRBI classes are more time intensive than Sunday school or cell group classes, but less time intensive than regular seminary courses.

What does it cost to go to a HRBI class?
The tuition is $45 per person, per class.  Additional members of the immediate family may sign up for $10.00 more per class, per person, per semester; they are not required to take the same courses to receive the discount.  Groups of five or more from the same organization receive a 20% discount when registering in the same semester. The student will purchase his or her own textbooks.  Textbooks may be ordered through our Central Baptist Theological Seminary Bookstore.

When and where do the classes meet?
Classes are held Monday nights starting at 7:00 pm at Colonial Baptist Church, 2221 Centerville Turnpike, Virginia Beach 23464.  From I-64 take the Indian River E (Exit 286B) to merge onto VA-407S/Indian River Road.  Turn right onto Centerville Turnpike.  Cross Kempsville Road; Colonial Baptist Church is located on the right side of the road immediately past Centerville Elementary School.

Are the instructors degreed?
The Institute instructors have degrees in their respective fields of specialty; many have graduate or doctoral degrees.  A few instructors have lifetime, real-world experience that qualifies them to teach in the Institute.

Can I get a Continuing Education Unit for completion of an HRBI course?
Completion of a  full credit course (12 weeks of attendance) earns 2 CEUs in either Biblical or Educational Studies through the Association of Christian Schools International© (ACSI).  Completion of a half credit course (6 hours of attendance) earns one CEU.

Does HRBI offer a degree or certificate program?
For those students who desire a structured course of instruction, HRBI offers two tracks of   formalized study:
  • Certificate track - the students complete one class from each of the six discipline areas for a Certificate of Completion
  • Graduation track - the students complete two classes from each of the six discipline areas for a Graduation Certificate
Christian school faculty and staff may choose one Education course as their discipline area if desired.

What are the six discipline areas in the Institute?
  • New Testament
  • Old Testament
  • Contemporary Issues
  • Spiritual Disciplines
  • Doctrines
  • Bible Interpretation
Additionally, there is an Education category designed to meet the learning needs and licensure requirements of Christian school educators.

Can I audit a HRBI class?
Because of the highly interactive and group discussion format of HRBI courses, advanced preparation is required;  auditing is not recommended.  However, if a student desires to audit a course, the instructor has the authority to make an exception for that student on an individual basis.  The student would be expected to read the material needed to fully participate in the course.

How do I sign up for a course?
